The Birth Story:
Landry was due on August 10, 2012, and Josh really wanted him to come on his birthday, August 8, 2012. However, Landry decided that he had his own plan and that he was more than comfortable to stay nice and cozy in the womb. After the doctors had told Josh and I for 3 weeks that he could come any day because I was already dilated and his head was really low, we were waiting in anticipation and were certain he would come early. It was clear as the due date approached that he probably wasn't coming on his own so we scheduled an induction for Wednesday, August 15.
I absolutely did not want to be induced. In fact, I wanted to do everything naturally. That was my plan, and I wanted to stick to it. After doing some research, I decided that it would be ok to be induced, but I still wanted to try and do the rest naturally. So, on Wednesday morning, we headed to the hospital at 5:30 AM. They started the pitocin around 8:00 AM and the contractions started picking up. I thought things were going well until the doctor came in around 10 and told us that she really wanted me to get an epidural. She told us that Landry's heart rate was going up and down, which indicated that he was in stress. She said that if that continued, I would have to have a C-section and she wanted to be ready for that by already having the epidural in, so I wouldn't have to undergo general anesthesia, which posed more risks to both me and Landry.
I was definitely disappointed but had always said that I would do what was best for him even if that meant not going by the plan. So, I got the epidural and then Dr. Borodo broke my water and they started the pitocin back. What was a slow morning of not progressing turned into a fast moving afternoon. The contractions were coming on fast and strong. After about 45 minutes to an hour, I started feeling immense pressure in my back and really low in my stomach. I asked the nurse if that was normal and she looked surprised and said that it might be time to have a baby. I was taken off guard because I thought it would take at least a couple of hours. Dr. Borodo came in to check me and confirmed that it was time to push. I pushed for about 45 minutes and on 3:54 PM, little Landry was born. He came out wailing and cried for the first 15 minutes. He definitely has a strong set of lungs.
Josh jokes about the whole birthing process, saying that it didn't seem like that big a deal. I know that everybody's stories are different, but I will have to agree with my husband in that it wasn't that bad. Once the drugs set in, I didn't really feel anything. In fact while I was pushing, we were watching HGTV and I commented to Josh that on the show we were watching, they were using the stencil that I wanted to put in the living room. All the nurses laughed at the fact I was so laid back. All in all it was a good experience, and once he was born, it didn't matter that I hadn't done it naturally. In fact, it seemed silly that it mattered that much in the first place.
Choosing the Name:
We decided to keep the name a secret until he was born. We only told our families, since all of them wouldn't be able to be present when he was born. When we found out we were pregnant, I hoped it would be a girl because we had both agreed long ago on a girl's name. I knew that if it was a boy, we were going to have trouble deciding on a name because I didn't like any of the names Josh liked and vice versa. It actually wasn't that bad. The first name we agreed on was Elijah Joshua, but we decided that we knew too many Elijahs. Before we got pregnant, we had always talked about the idea of naming our son, Landry. We first heard of the name while watching the TV series, Friday Night Lights. We wanted something different and unique but not weird. The more we tossed around the name, the more we liked it and it kind of stuck. I also discovered a website which stated that the name Landry meant "lion man", and we had already decided that we would do the nursery in lions, so it was set. And of course, his middle name is after his dad.
The title of this post comes from a new Dave Barnes' song that we love. Hope you enjoy it too!
